The instruction that sets an AI's role, assumptions and tone at the very start. It takes priority over the user's input in shaping overall behavior.
A system prompt is the setup of “role, policy and constraints” given to an AI at the start of a conversation. For example, “You are a polite customer-support representative” steers the AI's overall behavior.
It has higher priority than ordinary user input and is used to deliver consistent responses by fixing it on the application side. It is an important element of prompt design.
