An LLM whose model weights are published, so anyone can use, modify and self-host it. Llama, DeepSeek and Qwen are examples.

An open-source LLM (open-weight model) is an LLM whose trained model weights are published, allowing free use, modification and redistribution within the terms of its license. Meta Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral and Qwen are well known.

Because you can run it on your own servers or in your own cloud, you can use it without sending data outside, and it is easier to customize (fine-tune). On the other hand, operating it requires a certain amount of infrastructure and expertise.
